U-Hi, Ferris Set Up Battle For State Berth

University and Ferris survived loser-out games Thursday in the Greater Spokane League distict soccer playoffs and earned the right to face each other Monday for the league’s second berth in the State AAA tournament.

U-High, behind goals from Alicia Crowe and Sara Nelson, blanked Lewis and Clark 2-0. The Titans, who scored both of their goals in the second half, will host Monday’s matchup against the Saxons, who knocked off Gonzaga Prep 5-3 in overtime behind four goals by Mariah McConnaughey.

The winner of the U-High-Ferris match will play GSL regular-season champion Mead Wednesday at Mead to determine seeding to state.

In Thursday’s win over G-Prep, Ferris dominated the overtime period by outscoring the Bullpups 3-1. McConnaughey scored twice during regulation and added two more goals during the overtime.

Heather Lynn scored the Saxons’ other goal in overtime.

Prep’s final score came with only 30 seconds left in the extra period.

In other area soccer action, Northwest Christian edged Valley Christian 1-0 in a Bi-County League boys’ match to determine one of the league’s two district playoff berths.

The Crusaders, who scored the only goal of the match at 50-minute mark, will play the winner of today’s Northport-St. George’s match on Nov. 8 to determine seeding to the district tournament, which will be played in Kennewick starting Nov. 15.
