Ah Yat Sparks Montana Win

Associated Press

Brian Ah Yat threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score Saturday night in Los Angeles as unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Montana topped Cal State Northridge 43-36 despite the effort of Matador quarterback Aaron Flowers, who passed for 457 yards and four TDs.

Ah Yat completed 21 of 40 passes for 265 yards and rushed for 78 yards on 13 carries. He scored on a 4-yard run and threw touchdown passes of 14 and 17 yards to Mike Erhardt in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies outscored the Matadors 22-16 in the final 15 minutes.

Ah Yat threw his first TD pass to Erhardt with 6:43 remaining to put the Grizzlies ahead for good, and the pair teamed up again 2:12 later to make it 43-29.

The Matadors scored with 4 seconds to play on a 68-yard pass from Flowers to Perry to cut the final margin to seven points.

Flowers, who completed 29 of his 52 throws, also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to David Romines and a 22-yarder to Jimmy Greninger, both in the second quarter.

Weber State 17, Montana State 7

Scott Shields’ interception that led to a first-quarter touchdown and his 24-yard field goal with 6 minutes left in the game lifted Weber past visiting MSU.

Weber held MSU to only 26 yards in the first half and 170 yards for the game.

Following Shields’ first-quarter interception, Weber State needed only 17 yards for a touchdown, and Clemente Sainten got most of those - along with the touchdown, on a 2-yard run. Sainten finished with 93 yards rushing on 23 carries.

Quarterback Roger Cook, who completed 28 of 41 passes for 185 yards, drove the Wildcats 81 yards on 15 plays and hit Taurus McGhee for a 3-yard score just before the half.

The Bobcats avoided a shutout on a 1-yard sneak by Rob Compson that pulled the Bobcats within 14-7 with 12:15 to play.

Matt Engelking rushed for 127 yards for MSU.
