Pirates Bow To Bearcats In Title Game

The Whitworth women’s soccer team had fourth-ranked Willamette on the ropes Saturday afternoon, but the Pirates couldn’t come up with the knockout punch.
Jamie Barton scored in the ninth minute of overtime on an assist from Kristy Ell to give the Bearcats a 2-1 win in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges championship match at Sparks Field in Salem, Ore.
Whitworth’s Pirates (16-4-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute when Chrisanne Roseleip’s corner kick carried over the head of Willamette goalkeeper Robin Heard and stayed inside the far post.
The victory gives the Bearcats (18-1-1) a berth in the four-team Pacific Northwest Region Tournament on Nov. 16-17. Whitworth must hope for an at-large berth.
Community Colleges of Spokane and Skagit Valley played to a 1-1 tie in a NWAACC match at Mount Vernon.
Skagit Valley took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal by Chantel Blood at the 42-minute mark. Blood’s goal was on a direct kick from 25 yards out.
CCS gained the tie when Holly Vanwert received a pass from Jen Harris and kicked a low ball into the left-hand corner.
CCS is now 10-1-4 for the year. Skagit Valley is 10-5-2.
Men’s soccer
CCS shut out Skagit Valley 2-0 in NWAACC action at Skagit Valley in Mount Vernon.
Brett Finke broke up a scoreless contest with a goal at the 67-minute mark.
CCS improved its first-place record to 13-3-1. Skagit Valley fell to 7-4-5.
Women’s volleyball
Eastern Washington got off to a quick start then held off Northern Arizona to post a 15-12, 15-7, 14-16, 8-15, 15-13 Big Sky Conference victory at Flagstaff, Ariz.
Lynn Robison had 19 kills and 18 digs to lead the Eagles. Kim Exner added 17 kills followed by Lora Botha with 16. Toni Schwinn finished with 53 assists.
EWU improves its league mark to 5-7 and its overall record to 12-11. NAU falls to 6-6 and 11-13.
Revenge was sweet for Gonzaga which defeated Pepperdine 12-15, 15-12, 15-7, 15-4 in West Coast Conference action at Martin Centre after losing to the Waves earlier this season.
The Kubista twins, Jennifer and Christy, teamed for 36 kills and 29 digs to pace the Bulldogs. Theresa Spink had her third consecutive match of double-figure kills with 15. Nicole Lamoure tallied 48 assists, 12 digs and four blocks.
Katie Jo Borgmann had five kills and 20 digs to lead Whitworth to a 16-14, 6-15, 15-13, 13-15, 15-10 Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges win over Lewis & Clark College in Portland.
Mandy Decious and Renee Williams each had nine kills and 15 digs for the Pirates.
Idaho (10-2, 21-4) earned a straight-set 15-10, 15-6, 15-8 victory over New Mexico State (2-10, 6-22) in Big West Conference action at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho.
Jessica Moore paced the Vandals with 10 blocks and seven kills.
