Gore Seeks Blacks’ Votes At Four Churches In Detroit

Associated Press

In one last effort to firm up a core Democratic constituency, Vice President Al Gore spent much of Sunday visiting some of the largest black churches here. He made his visits short and to the point.

“I want you to vote for Bill Clinton and me,” Gore repeatedly asked of the four congregations he visited.

Talking to more than 1,000 members of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Gore joked that he wanted to spare churchgoers “any lingering mystery” for his visit. The congregation listened politely and applauded tepidly.

During the campaign season, Gore has made numerous visits to black churches.

“It is time on Tuesday to make the right choice,” the vice president said Sunday.

Gore, who spent a year in Divinity School at Vanderbilt University, peppered his remarks with Scripture quotations and Bible stories, including Ezekiel, the burning bush, Daniel in the lion’s den and the good Samaritan.

“We are called in our lives to reach down to help up those who need help,” Gore said, suggesting that churchgoers can do this by supporting the Clinton-Gore ticket as well as other Democrats.
