Cellular Towers Appear On Skyline As Sprint Expands
While driving along the freeway, motorists might notice a tower topped by a rectangular antenna and a flashing light next to the Spalding auto wrecking yard.
The 120-foot concrete structure is a cellular tower owned by Sprint. The light is a safety measure to let planes and helicopters know the tower is there, said Reed Lommen, Sprint PCS property manager.
The long-distance company is expanding into the cellular phone business and currently is erecting towers throughout Spokane and North Idaho, said Lommen. The towers are also being constructed on water tanks and rooftops in the area, Lommen said.
The company won’t disclose how many towers it plans to put up, but Lommen the company has been “aggressively building out a network.”
It expects to begin selling airtime and digital phones at local retailers during the next several months.
