San Diego Drops Gu Men
Gonzaga University’s men’s soccer team missed a chance to all but assure itself of an NCAA tournament bid by dropping a 4-2 West Coast Conference decision Friday at the University of San Diego.
The Bulldogs (10-6-1 overall and 3-2 in the WCC) needed only to sneak past USD (9-3-4 and 2-2-1) and then knock off Loyola Marymount on Sunday to secure at least a share of the WCC title and a postseason berth.
San Diego spoiled that scenario by jumping out to a 3-1 first-half lead and then answering a second-half goal by GU’s Matt Blasdel. The Bulldogs must now get past Loyola and hope that league-leading Santa Clara tumbles this weekend in order to claim a share of the WCC title.
Women’s soccer
Washington State matched its longest winning streak of the season - three matches - by downing visiting Oregon 2-0 as sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Glazer picked up her third consecutive shutout.
Colleen Loughlin gave WSU a 1-0 halftime lead and Kimberly Schelpf capped the Cougars’ scoring with a second-half goal on an assist from Randi Glas.
Erica Ledezma scored a pair of goals and Sarah Strange picked up a pair of assists as Cal Poly Pomona (11-7-2) dropped Gonzaga (1-15-3) 4-0 in the Bulldogs’ regular-season finale.
Amy Pannel scored two goals and Katie Snow added a goal and an assist as Community Colleges of Spokane blanked visiting Southwest Oregon 3-0.

North Idaho’s Danny Vega, who was No. 1 in his 118-pound weight class last season, suffered his first loss of the year, but the Cardinals rallied from an early 10-6 deficit to post a 26-10 dual-meet win over Highline Community College.
NIC’s Trevor Prangley had the only pin, flattening Josh Land at the 4:01 mark of their 177-pound match.
