Isaac Hawkins climbed down from the victory stand, paused briefly, then started running again.

Most Washington high schools runners finished their cross country seasons last Saturday in Pasco. Hawkins, the day’s fastest runner by 20 seconds, began another month of training.

Hawkins should be among the favorites at the Foot Locker West regional, Dec. 7 at Fresno, Calif. The top eight placers advance to Foot Locker’s national meet, Dec. 14 at San Diego.

Hawkins ran the 3-mile Sun Willows Golf Course layout in 14 minutes, 39.1 seconds last Saturday. Although he won his second consecutive State AAA meet with the course’s 11th-best time, Hawkins wasn’t overjoyed.

His time at the halfway point was on track to break the 14:09.5 course record set by Mead’s Matt Davis in 1993.

“It was real frustrating,” Hawkins said of the final 1-1/2 miles. “I felt like I was fighting myself out there. Things weren’t flowing, but I guess I did OK.”

Hawkins broke six course records during the season, including the one Davis set at Mead’s home, Whitworth College. Hawkins said breaking the Whitworth record made him believe the Sun Willows mark was within reach.
