A-3 Independent Girls Basketball Preview

Wallace Miners

1995-96 record: 6-14

Coach: Art Krulitz

Years coaching, record: 4, 31-33

Top returners: Meghan England, 5-foot-9, junior, forward; Lucia Gregory, 5-11, senior, post; Lisa Calabretta, 5-10, sr., f.

Newcomers: Jayme Nipp, 5-6, sophomore, g; Heather Branstetter, 5-6, soph., point guard; Renee Sleazer, 5-3, soph., pg; Sarah Mitchell, 5-6, jr., g.

Bonus shot: It’s going to be Team Krulitz coaching the Miners. Krulitz’s brother, Kirby, moves over after 10 years as head boys coach Dick Lilienkamp’s assistant.

Coach’s comment: “We’re going to be very young. We’ll have four freshmen on varsity. Whatever we accomplish we’ll have to do as a team. We’ll have to get a lot of contributions off the bench.”

Outlook: The Miners must find a way to replace the 20 points per game of post Joy Sperry, who graduated. The won-loss record won’t be important to Krulitz. He figures the victories will come later in the season as the team adjusts to his system and overcomes growing pains. Wallace opens Friday at home against Potlatch.
