Dollar Hits 4-Year Low Vs. Pound

The dollar touched a new four-year low against the pound but rallied to end mostly higher Thursday after Germany’s central banker said he hoped the U.S. currency would strengthen.

The remarks by Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer marked the second time this week he has called for a higher dollar.

His comments were seen as the clearest indication yet that German economic policy-makers are worried over the mark’s recent strength, which could threaten Germany’s economic recovery.
