Museum Exhibit Displays Antiques You Can Bank On

Ever own a mechanical bank as a kid?

Remember what happened to it?

It’s probably worth a healthy sum of dough today.

Seafirst Bank never discarded its prized mechanical bank collection, a collection that’s been compounding over five decades.

Now through the end of the year, 24 of Seafirst’s antique, cast-iron banks are on display at Cheney Cowles Museum, 2316 W. First. Included is one of the first mechanical banks ever manufactured.

“Each bank is an original, and all are considered to be rare,” said Peggy Weiss, director of the Seafirst Corporate Art Collection. “Few mechanical banks have survived the decades, and most that have are privately owned and rarely displayed publicly.”

The collection was begun by retired University of Washington professor Gilbert Schaller in 1940. He acquired many through antique dealers.

For gallery hours, call the museum at 456-3931.
