Lawrence Pence Receives Ccs Service Award

Compiled By Maisy Fernandez

Lawrence Pence, a retired Spokane surgeon, has been recognized by the Community Colleges of Spokane Board of Trustees for his generous financial gifts that established an ongoing student scholarship fund through the CCS Foundation.

Pence received his education during the Depression, which was only possible because of scholarships.

“I feel an obligation to do something similar - to help other worthy students in need,” he said.

Pence received the CCS Distinguished Service Award, the highest award given by the district.

Catherine Jendia and Mandy Mayer, associates of Express Personnel Services in Spokane, were awarded scholarships by the international staffing firm. Mayer is a dental hygiene student at Spokane Community College. Jendia is a doctoral program candidate at Gonzaga.

William P. Robinson, president of Whitworth College, has been elected president of the Foundation for Independent Higher Education’s board of directors.

Robinson also serves on the boards of the Independent Colleges of Washington in Seattle, Friends of Higher Education in Seattle, the San Francisco Theological Seminary and the Spokane Intercollegiate Research and Technology Institute in Spokane.

Robinson is also listed in the 44th edition of “Who’s Who in America.”

Steve Harrison, Spokane Valley, was named editor of the Easterner, the student newspaper at Eastern Washington University. Harrison, a senior majoring in journalism and history, is a 1992 graduate of Central Valley High School and the son of Bill and Georgene Harrison.

Stu W. Evey, a Spokane independent business and management consultant, was elected to the board of directors of the fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta.

During the fraternity’s convention, Evey, a graduate of the University of Washington, also received the Fiji Award recognizing members for service to the fraternity and society.

Global Federal Credit Union has awarded college scholarships to the following high school graduates:

Ryan Hemingway, Freeman High School, and Mellisa Sherwood, Central Valley High School. Each received a $500 Merle E. Brumgard Memorial Scholarship, for seniors who are primary members of the credit union and dependents of active-duty or retired military personnel.

Johanna Alexander, Shadle Park, and Rachel Hendrickson, Ferris, each received the $500 Mary Milla Scholarship, given to graduating seniors who are global members.
