Purdue’s 3s, Turnovers Bring Down Vandals
Idaho opened its season Sunday against a Purdue team that hit a barrage of 3-pointers and buried the Vandals along the way 86-63.
The Boilermakers made a teamrecord 13 3-pointers, led by Chad Austin’s 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting that included six treys. Brad Miller added 19 points for Purdue.
“I was just in the flow of the game,” said Austin, who was one point short of his career high. “I was just doing the same thing I was doing in practice. It just happened to go in today.”
The Vandals were led by Reggie Rose and Jason Jackman, each with 14 points. Kevin Byrne had seven rebounds for Idaho.
“That was a good experience for us,” Idaho coach Kermit Davis said. “I was just disappointed with some details in that game. The key to the game for us was points allowed off turnovers.”
Purdue had 27 points off turnovers.
The Boilermakers, three-time defending Big Ten champions, were never seriously threatened after snapping a 4-4 tie. Led by Austin’s two 3-pointers, Purdue went on a 13-2 run to lead 17-6 with 13:41 remaining in the first half.
Idaho closed within five at 20-15 on Troy Thompson’s layup at the 9:56 mark, but Purdue scored seven consecutive points to lead 27-15 on Michael Robinson’s 3-pointer.
Purdue led 43-32 at halftime and Idaho got no closer. The Boilermakers twice built leads of 30 points in the final 5 minutes.
Idaho shot 43 percent from the field, while the Boilermakers hit 51 percent of their shots overall and 59 percent from 3-point range.
“We hit our open shots,” Austin said. “I think we have better shooters than last year. Our freshmen are better shooters than what we had last year.”
The Vandals were led by Reggie Rose and Jason Jackman, each with 14 points. Kevin Byrne had seven rebounds for Idaho.
