Sprained Knee Curbs High-Priced Coyote

Around the NHL

The Phoenix Coyotes will be without center Jeremy Roenick for up to three weeks as he recovers from a sprained right knee.

Roenick collided with New York Islanders winger Brent Hughes with 12:44 remaining in the third period of Saturday night’s 3-3 overtime tie.

Since signing a five-year, $20 million contract on Oct. 14, Roenick has scored just four goals and added 11 assists in 16 games with the Coyotes.

Trouble brewing for goalies

The NHL crackdown on goaltender equipment commences Dec. 15. Thereon, goaltenders will be subjected to random postgame tests. Their pads cannot exceed a 12-inch width. Their blockers cannot exceed an 8-inch width. If they do not measure up, they will face suspensions.

Trouble is brewing.

Calipers to measure pads and blockers were distributed at the recent general manager meetings in Ottawa. Some goaltenders have said that they have had ample warning and that conforming should not be problematic. But there are teams that have found every piece of goaltending equipment in their locker rooms - including new pieces designed to conform to the new regulations - haven’t fit the specs.

Anaheim finally beats Detroit

Teemu Selanne and Garry Valk scored the tying and go-ahead goals 22 seconds apart in the second period Sunday night in Anaheim’s 3-1 victory over visiting Detroit, the Mighty Ducks’ first win over the Red Wings in their 13 meetings.

Kings appear powerless

The Los Angeles Kings have scored only once in their last three games, a power-play goal by Ray Ferraro.
