Campbell Doesn’t Like Net Result

From Wire Reports

New York Rangers Coach Colin Campbell says he was surfing the Internet the other day and saw that he and five other coaches - Boston’s Steve Kasper, Montreal’s Mario Tremblay, Pittsburgh’s Eddie Johnston, Philadelphia’s Terry Murray and Phoenix’s Don Hay - were facing the ax.

“That’s the reality of the business,” he says. “Here today. Gone tomorrow.”

In this case, Kasper seems to be the only coach in immediate danger of losing his job. Trades will be explored in New York, where Luc Robitaille is being shopped, and in Phoenix, where the new coach has a three-year contract and where Whalers defenseman Paul Coffey reportedly has suddenly become a priority.

Around the ice

Brendan Shanahan scored his 300th goal while completing his eighth career hat trick as Detroit posted a 5-2 home win over Toronto… . Mike Ridley and Alexander Mogilny scored two goals each and Corey Hirsch made 41 saves, leading the visiting Vancouver Canucks to a 6-2 victory over the Hartford Whalers… . Ron Tugnutt had 31 saves as the visiting Ottawa Senators won their first road game against Washington and ended the Capitals’ six-game unbeaten streak with a 2-1 victory.

Trade tale

The New York Islanders acquired left wing Paul Kruse from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 1997.
