Dollar Near Three-Year High Vs. Yen

The dollar closed above 111 yen Monday after rising to its highest level in nearly three years on supporting comments from a meeting of leading finance ministers and on a $16.1 billion bailout of Japanese lending houses.

In late New York trading, the dollar cost 111.40 yen, up from 110.83 yen Friday. It rose as high as 111.67 yen during the trading day, the dollar’s highest point since Jan. 25, 1994, when it hit 111.85 yen.

The dollar’s rise against the yen, which also pulled up the dollar against the German mark and most major currencies, was capped by profit taking after Japan’s finance minister said the dollar was fine where it was.
