Boy Hit By Car On Pines Road Seriously Hurt

A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured Wednesday when he was hit by a car while trying to cross one of the Spokane Valley’s busiest streets.

Victor Corrales was hit about 4:15 p.m. as he ran across Pines Road just south of the First Avenue intersection.

His white shirt, left on the sidewalk by paramedics, was soaked in blood.

“The last we heard, he was serious (condition),” Washington State Patrol Sgt. K.R. Lofquist said.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Deaconess Medical Center.

Troopers said the boy and his older brother were playing unsupervised on the east side of Pines when they decided to cross the street. They ran to the middle of the turn lane, where the older boy stopped, Lofquist said.

His younger brother kept running and almost made it to the sidewalk.

One of his black high-top sneakers lay about a foot from the curb, marking the spot where a white Mazda sports car hit him.

Troopers said the driver, who was not speeding, tried to stop when he saw the boy run into his lane.

“He laid down a bunch of skids but made contact,” Lofquist said.

The boy was flipped onto the hood of the car and was carried nearly 50 feet before the driver could stop.

Traffic was tied up near Pines and Sprague for nearly an hour while troopers investigated the accident.

An elderly man who lives in the area stood nearby with his young grandson and pointed out the victim’s bloody clothes.

“That’s why grandpa tells you always to look before you cross the street,” the man said to the boy. “That’s why, honey.”
