Byu Dismantles Utah State With Two Returns For Scores

Associated Press

James Dye returned a punt 79 yards and Shay Muirbrook rambled 45 yards with a fumble recovery as 21st-ranked Brigham Young rolled over Utah State 45-17 Friday night.

Steve Sarkisian was 24 of 37 for 310 yards in the air, but went without a touchdown pass for the first time this season. It was up to third-string quarterback Kevin Feterik to salvage BYU’s string of games with at least one TD pass now 37 - on a 5-yard, fourth-quarter toss to Ben Cahoon.

The Western Athletic Conference’s Cougars (5-1), who led by 17 at halftime, put the game away when Dye broke away from USU’s punt coverage with just 8 seconds left in the third period.

After Micah Knorr’s 31-yard field goal about 3 minutes later for the Big West Conference’s Aggies (2-4), Cougar freshman running back Ronney Jenkins scored on an 18-yard run, and with 4:35 remaining Feterik’s pass to Cahoon boosted BYU’s lead to 45-10.

Patrick Mullins, in for injured QB Matt Sauk, salved the Aggies’ pride when he found Shawn Turner open for a 26-yard TD catch 1:11 later.
