Joseph Nets Shutout As Oilers Win Again

Curtis Joseph made 35 saves, 17 in the third period, as the Edmonton Oilers beat the visiting Vancouver Canucks 2-0.

The Oilers, who won their season opener on Friday night, scored both goals during an 81-second span of the first period.

Dean McAmmond scored on a power play with 1:47 left in the first period, his second goal of the season. Rem Murray scored his first career goal with 26 seconds left in the period.

Wayne Gretzky’s debut in New York was a flop as former Ranger John Vanbiesbrouck put on a goaltending clinic with 34 saves in Florida’s victory.

Gretzky, playing his first game as a Ranger in Madison Square Garden, saw plenty of ice time, particularly after Mark Messier was ejected in the second period for a checking-from-behind penalty.

But Gretzky, the NHL’s career scoring leader, who signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Rangers this summer, could only manage one assist.

Rookie defenseman Chris O’Sullivan ended Calgary’s power-play frustration with a goal midway through the second period and goalie Rick Tabaracci made 19 saves as the Flames beat Buffalo.

O’Sullivan scored his first NHL goal at 13:57. The goal ended an 0-for-10 streak by Calgary on the power play.
