Dollar Falls Against Yen
The dollar finished mostly lower Monday, dropping sharply against the yen after a top Japanese political aide forecast a rise in domestic interest rates following elections in less than two weeks.
The remarks by Shizuka Kamei, head of public relations for the dominant Liberal Democratic Party, helped incite a broad rally in the yen. Japan’s rates have been at record lows for more than year, which have helped depress the yen and been an important reason for the dollar’s rise to 2-1/2-year highs against the Japanese currency last week.
