Naipo, Lc Ace Out Mead
The race for second place in Greater Spokane League volleyball became tighter Tuesday.
Erin Naipo had three of her six aces during a 13-1 first-game run as fourth-place Lewis and Clark (7-3) swept to a 15-8, 15-3, 15-12 win over visiting Mead (8-3).
LC’s win moved idle Rogers (8-2) into second place by one-half game. Second place isn’t an idle goal; the league’s No. 2 receives a first-round bye at the district tournament and an automatic berth to regionals.
More in the chase for second will be determined tonight, when Rogers plays at Mead. The Pirates won earlier this year, but Mead played without 6-foot-3 Jessica Sanborn, who was on a recruiting trip.
Carlin Oeljen had a block, kill and ace when LC rallied from a 7-2 first-game deficit. Shannon Snow’s two kills helped the Tigers during a five-point, middle-game run. Sanborn had 11 kills and four blocks for the Panthers, who led the final game 8-6 before fading.
Nothing changed in first place, as Missy Blackshire’s nine kills and first-game serving helped Ferris (11-0) to a 15-9, 15-7, 15-7 win at North Central (2-8).
NC’s Sarah Menard, who had 10 kills and 12 digs, started the first game with six consecutive serving points. Ferris played without setter Janelle Morrisette, who attended a family funeral.
Brooke Olzendam scored the final three points of the marathon third game and Joy Potter, returning from an ankle injury, capped the match with two points as Shadle Park (3-8) topped visiting Central Valley 11-15, 15-11, 20-18, 15-11.
Shadle’s Melissa Chadwick had 19 kills and nine blocks. Crystal Lee had 22 kills and Rikki Jackson 18 digs for the Bears (3-7), who had five first-game aces.
Jen Williams’ nine kills and three blocks helped visiting Gonzaga Prep (5-5) sweep University 15-3, 15-11, 15-3. Gretchen Smith of the Titans (1-10) had eight digs and three aces.
Lescia Myers had six aces, three digs and three blocks as East Valley (6-0) beat visiting Riverside 15-6, 15-3, 15-1 to reach the halfway point of the Frontier League with a perfect mark.
Deb Asbury and Rebecca Triplett added five blocks and four kills apiece for the Knights. Meredith Thompson had five digs, three kills and two blocks for the Rams (0-6).
Lisa Mustard served six consecutive points in the fifth game as Cheney (2-4) rallied for a 13-15, 14-16, 15-7, 15-5, 15-2 win over visiting West Valley (1-5).
Paula Olson added 15 kills and Mustard 24 assists for the Blackhawks, who had tied the second game at 14 after trailing by six points. Chatelle Frost had eight digs and three blocks, and Cameron Ouellette added 11 kills for the Eagles.
Odessa (6-0) broke a tie for first place with a 15-9, 4-15, 15-12 Bi-County League win over visiting Davenport (5-1).
Two-time defending State B champion Wilbur-Creston (5-0) stayed on Odessa’s heels. The two meet Oct. 24 on W-C’s floor.
Northwest Christian (5-0) won at St. George’s 15-8, 15-10, 15-6 to continue to set the pace in the Panorama League.
The Crusaders have already beaten their closest pursuer, 4-1 Selkirk.
Tekoa-Oakesdale (5-0) went on the road to beat Garfield-Palouse 15-1, 15-2 and reach the halfway point in the Whitman County League with a onegame lead on St. John-Endicott (4-1).

Third-place EV (6-3-1, 5-2-1, 16 points) used defense and Amanda Harvey’s corner kick at 26 minutes to edge second-place WV 1-0 in a Frontier match at EV.
The Eagles (6-3-1, 6-2-0, 18) had a 13-11 shots-on-goal edge, but EV’s defense hounded WV’s forwards.
EV’s win helped Deer Park/Riverside take over first place alone. Larissa Mueller’s three goals and one assist guided Deer Park/Riverside (8-0-0, 7-0-0, 21) to a 10-0 win at Pullman (2-4-2, 2-3-2, 8).
Nicki Snyder and Bernice Stime added two goals and one assist apiece, and Katie Bowers had one goal and three assists for DP/R.
Kdee Anderson scored twice to give her eight goals for the year and Tanya Birchler added a breakaway goal from midfield as fourth-place Cheney (4-5-1, 4-3-1, 13) beat visiting Medical Lake 3-0.
Anderson scored her first goal from 18 yards by dribbling through several defenders. On the second, Nicole Hillard, near the corner flag, fed Anderson in the middle. Cheney has twice shut out the Cardinals (2-7-1, 2-5-1, 7).
