Meeting On Indian Trail Library Planned Construction On The New Building Will Begin Next Spring

Kathy Mulady Staff Writer

Will the planned Indian Trail library have enough parking? What will it look like from the outside? Will there be windows in the children’s section?

Spokane Public Library board members and designers from Tan-Hayamoto Architects are inviting public questions and comment on the project at a community meeting Wednesday.

Construction of the library is scheduled to begin next spring on 1.5 acres next to Indian Trail Community Church near Barnes and Indian Trail roads. The library will be about 10,000 square feet, slightly larger than most of the city’s other neighborhood branches.

“The building will be designed to fit with the community, but we aren’t specifically asking for input on the design,” said Dolly Richendrfer, community relations manager for the library. Discussion is expected to focus on how the library will be positioned on the property, and where the driveway and 40-car parking lot will be placed.

Richendrfer said no traffic hearings or special use permits are necessary before construction. Notices of next week’s meeting have been sent to people who live near the property.

Representatives from Tan-Heyamoto Architects, selected from a field of eight design firms that submitted proposals for the job, plan to attend the meeting.

Doug Heyamoto said designers will attend the meeting and plan to display drawings showing how the library and parking lot will be positioned on the site.

Preliminary floor plans may also be displayed Tan-Heyamoto designed the East Side branch library that opened last year next to the East Central Community Center. It has a rustic brick exterior and is light and airy inside. Heyamoto said he expects the Indian Trail library will have the same open feeling.

The Indian Trail Neighborhood Specific Plan recommends building the library on the west side of Indian Trail Road, near the fire station and a future elementary school.

Library officials said not enough land was available there for the larger branch.
