It might not have been a miracle, but Todd Vangundy’s 41-yard pass to Adam Hiatt as time expired Friday made believers out of the Bonners Ferry fans who stormed the field to celebrate the Badgers’ 22-20 victory over Lakeland at home in an Intermountain League football battle.
“I was told to run to the corner, and when I got there I thought Todd was getting sacked, but he just threw a beautiful pass,” Hiatt said.
The pass to Hiatt in the back-right corner of the end zone was the second scoring play in the final 3:45 of the game. The play looked as though it was drawn up with a stick in a patch of dirt on the sidelines.
The Hawks had just completed a double reverse that quarterback Kurt Reese finished off with a 46-yard pass to Mike Larsen to put Lakeland up 20-16.
The teams traded possessions before the Badgers held Lakeland on downs and forced a punt that was downed at the 41-yard line. After missing Hiatt on the first attempt, Vangundy threw the game-winner. “This is a huge win,” Vangundy said. “To be honest, I didn’t expect to complete that pass at the end.”
Tears streamed down the face of Badgers coach Ted Reynolds as he clutched the game ball. Reynolds addressed his team after the game as the emotions spilled from 14 years of consecutive losses to Lakeland. “You’ve just broken a 14-stinking-year tradition and I’m so proud of all of you,” Reynolds said.
The Badgers are 2-0 in league play and 3-3 overall. The Hawks (2-1, 2-4) stood in disbelief and quickly left the field after shaking hands while the Bonners Ferry crowd went wild. “There’s not much you can say,” Lakeland coach Terry Kiefer said. “They came up with the big play at the end and we didn’t.”
The Badgers also got two rushing touchdowns from Hiatt, who ended up with 96 yards on 27 carries.
