Mickelson Leads U.S. Golfers Into Dunhill Cup Semifinals

Compiled From Wire Services

Spain was no match for Phil Mickelson and the rest of the United States team Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Dunhill Cup golf tournament at St. Andrews, Scotland.

Mickelson won by 11 strokes with a 6-under-par 66, and Steve Stricker birdied four of the last six holes as the United States romped into the semifinals by overpowering Spain 3-0.

Stricker, Mickelson and Mark O’Meara, who also play as individuals in next week’s World Match Play at Wentworth, England, will face Sweden today for a place in the final.

In the other semifinal, South Africa faces New Zealand.

David Ogrin, feeding off the cheers of a hometown crowd, made six birdies on his way to a 4-under-par 68 and extended his lead to three strokes after three rounds of the Texas Open in San Antonio.

Tiger Woods, who was two strokes off the lead entering the third round, couldn’t overcome a bad start and shot a 73 that left him in a group of eight at 210.

Annika Sorenstam’s steady 5-under-par 67 pushed her into a three-stroke lead over erratic Laura Davies after three rounds of the $600,000 Betsy King LPGA Classic in Kutztown, Pa.

Sorenstam started the day one stroke behind Davies, but three birdies in a six-hole span on the front nine at Berkleigh Country Club put her into the lead with a 54-hole total of 14-under 202.

Defending champion Lee Trevino played through back spasms while shooting a 64 that tied him for the lead with Bobby Stroble at the Transamerica Seniors in Napa, Calif.

Stroble, winless on the tour, eagled the final hole to card a 67. He and Trevino stand at 135, a stroke ahead of Tommy Aaron after three rounds.
