Bad Toe Won’t Stop Strawberry

From Wire Reports

Darryl Strawberry does have a fractured toe but says he can play. Kenny Rogers says he is healthy, but he may be dropped from the New York Yankees’ World Series roster.

Three days before the start of the Series, Yankees manager Joe Torre still had some major decisions to make.

“I expect to play,” Strawberry said Wednesday after taking batting practice for the first time since he was hurt in Sunday’s A.L. clincher. “I expect to strap on the uniform and have me some fun, just like I’ve been doing.”

While X-rays didn’t reveal a break, team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon said a CAT scan taken Wednesday morning showed a 1-to-2 millimeter fracture at the top of Strawberry’s right big toe.

The Pirates, who spent much of August dealing off experienced players and cutting payroll, resigned Al Martin to a two-year extension through the 1999 season. … Baltimore Orioles majority owner Peter Angelos said he has “no reason to believe” that Davey Johnson won’t be the team’s manager again next season. But club sources continued to say that Angelos is upset with Johnson. Meanwhile, the Orioles signed Pittsburgh Pirates’ pitching coach Ray Miller to a two-year contract with an option for a third year. … New York Yankees’ hitting coach Chris Chambliss will meet with the Angels today about their managerial opening.
