Inmate Agrees To Pay For Damage To Jail
Nathaniel J. Brown agreed Thursday to reimburse Spokane County for $280,000 in damage he caused to the jail.
When he’ll pay is another matter.
Brown, 18, was serving a 30-month sentence for burglary when he stuffed a jail toilet with wadded paper on June 18 and flushed several times.
That caused water to run down four more floors, shorting out computers, video monitors, alarm systems and electrical appliances.
Brown pleaded guilty Thursday in Superior Court to first-degree malicious mischief and two counts of custodial assault. The assault charges stem from Brown’s attack on jailers a few days before the flooding occurred.
Visiting Judge Fred Stewart imposed an exceptional sentence of 26 months, citing the extensive damage caused by the toilet stuffing.
Stewart warned Brown to take his new debt seriously. Once out of jail, he needs to get a job and start repaying the county, the judge said.
Repairs to the jail still haven’t been completed.
