Teen In Indoors Finale
Sixteen-year-old Martina Hingis of Switzerland defeated third-seeded Anke Huber of Germany 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) to advance to the final of the European Indoors tennis tournament in Zurich, Switzerland.
Hingis, seeded fifth, will play fourth-seed Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic in today’s final. Novotna upset second-seed and defending champion Iva Majoli 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.
Martina Navratilova celebrated her 40th birthday by leading her team to a 29-20 lead over Chris Evert’s squad in a Virginia Slims Legends Tour stop in Irving, Texas.
Navratilova’s team dominated the first day of the two-day competition, helping to mark a successful return for the player to the Dallas-Fort Worth area where Navratilova lived for several years. A crowd of 3,324 watched the 10 senior women compete.
Team Navratilova opened with Virginia Wade teaming first with Zina Garrison Jackson, then with Wendy Turnbull to win two doubles matches. Navratilova then defeated her former doubles partner, Pam Shriver, 6-2 in a singles match.
