Seven area youths, all members of the Young Marines of North Idaho (YMNI), participated in activities at the five-day Hellsgate Battalion Encampment recently.
Rob Fiessinger, John Franzatti, Jeff T. Hughes, Brandon J. March, Aric M. Morgan, Terry J. Olson and Jason Tracy, all qualified for sharpshooters and the Orienteering Ribbon with satisfactory performance on the day compass course, with the YMNI winning the orienteering course by earning points for specific tasks.
All hands also qualified for the Field Ribbon with the hot weather device for camping afield for more than 24 hours and cooking three satisfactory meals in temperatures in excess of 80 degrees.
Pvt. Morgan and PFC Hughes were both promoted to their current ranks while Hughes was recognized as the Outstanding Young Marine. Fiessinger was awarded an Achievement Ribbon in administration and Hughes tied for high shooter with a score of 114/150. Tracy performed over 100 push-ups during the physical fitness test and was to receive the Outstanding Young Marine Award before having to return home a day early due to an emergency.
Jan M. Gray, Plummer, was recently installed as an incumbent director of the Idaho Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) association earlier this month at the group’s 41st annual convention held at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.
Dette Halliday was recently chosen to represent North Idaho in the Down Under Bowl VIII All-Star Cheerleading trip to Australia last month.
Halliday, a high school sophomore, performed along with nine other Idaho girls in front of Australian and New Zealand fans and also appeared on radio and television.
She was picked at the Universal Cheerleaders Association camp and in 1994 her squad won the regional cheerleading competition and moved on to the national level. The squad qualified again in 1995 and competed in the nationals in Florida in February of this year.
