Mullen Skins Bears In Final Start

Scott Mullen’s final Spokane Indians start also ranks as his best.

Mullen (5-6) pitched six scoreless innings and struck out 11 Tuesday to lead the Indians over the Yakima Bears 4-0 at Yakima County Stadium.

In Mullen’s previous best outing, Aug. 7 against Yakima, he allowed one unearned run and struck out seven in seven innings.

Spokane (35-39) finished 19-19 on the road during the Northwest League season. The Indians complete their season tonight and Thursday night against visiting Everett (33-40). Enrique Calero (4-2) starts tonight for Spokane, which will capture third place in the North Division with one win.

Yakima (38-36) fell 1-1/2 games behind Bellingham in the North. Bellingham travels to Yakima for its final two games and will win the North unless the Bears sweep.

Yakima starter Darren Hall (0-1), recovering from elbow surgery, allowed Jeremy Giambi’s 39th run batted in during the first. Kenderick Moore singled to lead off the game, stole his 18th base and scored on Giambi’s single.

In the eighth, Giambi walked with one out against Neal Hannah and scored on Kit Pellow’s single, the league leader’s 64th RBI. Brandon Berger, who had walked, scored when he stole third and catcher Steve Wilson’s throw headed to the outfield.

Eric Sees singled to lead off the ninth and scored from third on a delayed steal. Spokane stole seven bases for a league-high 119.

Modesto Villarreal pitched one-hit ball for the final three innings for his third save.

Yakima won the season series 9-5. Spokane earned its second shutout - both against Yakima.
