Tettleton’s Big Blasts Key Texas Victory

Mickey Tettleton got a three-run double on a misplayed line drive in the first inning and later hit his first homer since Aug. 4 Tuesday night as Texas held on for an 8-7 win over visiting Minnesota.

Bobby Witt (14-9) lasted only five innings, allowing five runs and eight hits, but earned his seventh victory in eight decisions. He is 16-5 in his career against the Twins.

Brewers 8, Indians 2

Milwaukee

Mike Matheny celebrated his return to the majors with a home run, and Scott Karl won for the first time in more than a month as Milwaukee defeated Cleveland.

Matheny, recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A New Orleans, put Milwaukee in front 2-1 in the fourth inning with a two-out solo homer.

Royals 5, Blue Jays 2

Toronto

Joe Nunnally’s three-run home run in the eighth inning sent Kevin Appier and Kansas City to their fourth straight wins, beating Toronto.

Appier (12-10) pitched a seven-hitter, striking out 12.

White Sox 6, Tigers 4

Chicago

Robin Ventura hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning and Chicago beat Detroit.

Chicago began the day game one percentage point behind Baltimore in the A.L. wild-card race, but now is a game up.

Athletics 10, Yankees 9

Oakland, Calif.

Shortstop Derek Jeter made two errors on the same play to help one Oakland rally and Tony Batista’s RBI single broke a seventh-inning tie, leading the Athletics to a wild victory over New York.

New York missed a chance to increase its lead in the A.L. East following Baltimore’s loss at California.

Angels 10, Orioles 2

Anaheim, Calif.

Tim Salmon tied his season high with four hits and drove in three runs and Pep Harris earned his first major-league victory as California defeated Baltimore.

Clearing the bases

Jim Abbott, sent down to the minors after a 1-15 start with California, was recalled from Triple-A Vancouver by the Angels… . In Honolulu, private services were held last week for Al Zarilla, whose 10-year major league career included stays with the St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. He was 77.

Kansas City Royals reliever Jeff Montgomery will undergo surgery on his pitching shoulder today and will miss the rest of the season… . Paul O’Neill and Jeff Nelson of the New York Yankees and Seattle catcher John Marzano were each suspended for two games for their roles in a brawl last week.
