Man’s Death Mystifies Police

From Staff And Wire Reports

Detectives are “stumped” by Spokane’s 13th homicide of the year - a man found dead at a North Side intersection Wednesday.

Passersby spotted the man staggering near Nevada and North about 1:45 a.m., police said. He collapsed in the road seconds later.

A driver who stopped to help discovered the man was bleeding heavily from a gaping chest wound, police said.

The driver called 911, but the victim died before paramedics arrived.

Investigators withheld the victim’s name while they attempted to notify his family. Lt. Jerry Oien said the man was in his 40s and had addresses in Spokane and Oregon.

There were no signs that the man was hit by a car, and people who live and work nearby didn’t see or hear anything, Oien said.

“Honestly, at this point, we’re stumped,” he said.
