Greenwell Continues To Drive Red Sox

Associated Press

American League

Mike Greenwell drove in two more runs, giving him 15 RBIs in September, and the Boston Red Sox scored five times in the second inning Friday night to defeat the White Sox 10-3 at Chicago.

Boston moved within 2-1/2 games of Chicago in the A.L. wild-card chase. The White Sox remain one game ahead of Baltimore, which lost to Detroit.

Tim Wakefield (12-12), who allowed 16 hits in his last Comiskey Park appearance in June, surrendered eight hits and six walks in seven innings as Boston won for the 26th time in 35 games.

Greenwell had an RBI double in the second and a run-scoring single in the fifth, four days after he drove in nine runs in a game against Seattle. Greenwell has reached base 15 times in his last 23 trips up.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3

New York

Cecil Fielder led off the eighth inning with his second home run of the game to power New York.

Fielder’s 35th homer came off Bill Risley (0-1). His go-ahead drive was the Yankees’ first hit since he led off the third inning with a home run against Luis Andujar for a 3-0 lead.

Twins 6, Angels 2

Minneapolis

Brad Radke pitched a five-hitter and Pat Meares broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run single to spark Minnesota’s victory.

Meares punched a two-out hit into right-center field with the bases loaded as the Twins beat the Angels for the seventh straight time. The loss dropped California a season-worst 13 games below .500.

The Twins’ Paul Molitor had two infield hits to move within 11 of 3,000.

Rangers 7, Brewers 3

Milwaukee

Juan Gonzalez hit his 43rd homer and drove in four runs for Texas.

The Rangers extended their lead in the A.L. West to 6-1/2 games over Seattle, which was rained out in Cleveland.

John Burkett (3-1), making his sixth start for Texas, scattered seven hits in 8-2/3 innings.

Athletics 7, Royals 1

Oakland, Calif.

Mark McGwire survived a collision with Kansas City first baseman Bob Hamelin before hitting his major-league-leading 47th home run for Oakland.

In the fifth, McGwire, running out a grounder, had his nose bloodied when he was hit by Hamelin’s right elbow.
