Bishop Skylstad Will Speak On Political Duty

Political responsibility will be discussed at each Mass on Saturday and Sunday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside.

“The Citizen of Faith: How Faith Shapes Our Politics” will be be the topic of the Most Rev. William Skylstad, bishop of the Spokane Catholic Diocese.

He will speak at the 5 p.m. service today and again on Sunday at the 6:30, 9 and 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Masses.

Donna Hanson, secretary for the diocese’s social ministries, will tell how public policies make a difference in people’s lives following tonight’s service at 5 and Sunday’s Masses at 9 and 11 a.m.

New Life remodeled

New Life Assembly of God will host a three-day grand opening celebration, beginning Friday, for its newly remodeled church building at 11515 E. Broadway

The $750,00 project took five months to complete and resulted in an expanded main floor, a new basement and a handicap-usable elevator, as well as a paved parking lot.

In addition, the sanctuary size was doubled, and it now seats 425.

Included in the celebration will be a prime-rib dinner at 7 p.m. Friday. The $15 tickets must be purchased in advance; call 926-0362. Proceeds from the dinner will help purchase classroom partitions.

Also new at New Life Assembly of God is a 7 p.m. service on Fridays, beginning next Friday.

Anniversary banquet

Otis Manning Ministries of Spokane will celebrate its sixth anniversary with a banquet at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park. Speakers will be Jessy Dixon and Clyde Oliver.

Dixon, a gospel singer who has sung with Paul Simon, Cher, and Diana Ross, has received seven Grammy nominations. Oliver now ministers to people in Florida prisons, but for 11 years he worked with Kenneth Copeland Ministries in Texas.

The buffet banquet will include worship and music.

Fall Fest

St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene will hold its International Fall Fest on Sept. 28 at 625 E. Haycraft.

The event will start with a 4 p.m. Mass and be followed by international cuisine at 5:30. Food from several countries, including Italy and Mexico, will be represented in the dinner.

Each selection is priced individually, but none will cost more than $6, and kids’ meals will be at a reduced price.

Entertainment will be provided throughout the evening, and an auction following dinner will include an Oregon Coast cabin, a houseboat trip, gravel and wood.

Winning raffle tickets will bring prizes of $500 and $1,000.

‘Healing community’

“Healing Community: The Power of Connection” will be discussed by Larry Crabb in a seminar Sunday at New Life Community Church in Hayden, Idaho.

Crabb, a psychologist and Bible teacher who has facilitated seminars around the nation, will tell of his vision regarding healing within the community of faith.

Cost of Sunday’s event, sponsored by Genesis Associates of Coeur d’Alene, is $30, with advance registration requested.

Rev. Goebel honored

A Mass and brunch in the Gonzaga Prep gym at 11 a.m. Sept. 22 will honor the Rev. Robert Goebel.

Friends and family are invited to help celebrate Goebel’s years as a teacher, drama coach and vice principal at Gonzaga Prep, where he’s worked since 1957.

At 70, he’s still going strong, said William Ogle, event co-chairman.

“He’s on the go all day long.” Ogle said. “He’s going just like he was 50. He’s really kind of known as ‘Mr. Gonzaga.”’ A scholarship has been established in Goebel’s name.

Craft Day

Central Baptist Church, 19 W. Shannon, will sponsor a “Do Your Own Craft Day” from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. next Saturday in the church gym. The event is free and open to the public.

Participants are asked to bring a project to work on, meet other craft makers and exchange ideas.
