No No-No This Time As Rockies Rebound

Less than 10 hours after being no-hit by Hideo Nomo, the Colorado Rockies offense was back to normal.

Andres Galarraga broke a fifth-inning tie with his N.L.-leading 46th homer as the Rockies rebounded to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 in Denver Wednesday.

The Rockies, who have been no-hit twice this season, were held hitless until the third inning but recovered from a 3-0 deficit to end Pedro Astacio’s five-game winning streak.

Padres 8, Giants 5

San Francisco

Jody Reed’s RBI-single broke an eighth-inning tie and Ken Caminiti hit his third home run in two days as San Diego rallied after blowing a 4-1 lead.

The Padres pulled back to within a half-game of Los Angeles.

Braves 6, Astros 2

Atlanta

Fred McGriff moved closer to another 30-homer season with a pair of two-run home runs, leading Atlanta to its fourth straight victory, besting Houston.

Atlanta reduced its magic number to six for winning the N.L. East. The victory left the Braves six games ahead of Montreal before beginning a five-game series in Atlanta today.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 3

St. Louis

Ron Gant and Royce Clayton homered and Todd Stottlemyre pitched seven strong innings as St. Louis beat Chicago, reducing the Cardinals’ magic number to six.

The win, combined with Houston’s 6-2 loss in Atlanta, gave the Cardinals a 4-game lead in the N.L. Central.

Expos 4, Mets 3

Montreal

Moises Alou had his second straight three-hit game and scored the goahead run in the eighth when F.P. Santangelo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as Montreal beat New York. Montreal won for the sixth time in seven games to move 17 games over .500 for the first time this season.

Pirates 5, Reds 3

Pittsburgh

Jason Schmidt overcame eight walks in seven innings as Pittsburgh extended its winning streak to seven games.

Phillies 8, Marlins 6

Philadelphia

Kevin Stocker singled to break a seventh-inning tie and five relievers held Florida scoreless for 6-2/3 innings as Philadelphia rallied to beat the Marlins.

Clearing the bases

Outfielder Kevin Mitchell of the Cincinnati Reds was suspended without pay for the rest of the season for failure to report for the Reds’ last two games in Pittsburgh. … Atlanta’s Fred McGriff has homered twice in a game three times this year, and 27 times in his career. … San Diego’s Tony Gwynn went 2 for 2, raising his batting average to .356. He needs 47 more appearances in the final nine games to qualify for the batting champions.
