Student Brings Bb Gun To Junior High

From Staff And Wire Reports

FOR THE RECORD: 9-21-96 A headline Friday incorrectly identified where a 13-year-old student was arrested for possessing a BB gun. The arrest occurred at a satelite education site at Morning Star Boys Ranch.

A 13-year-old Chase Middle School student was arrested Thursday for bringing a BB gun and pocket knife to school.

The eighth-grader was immediately expelled from school.

The boy attended classes at the Morning Star Boys Ranch in the morning, and went to Chase in the afternoon.

Late Wednesday, Chase students informed school officials the student had a gun. He left school grounds before he could be searched.

Thursday morning, Chase officials went to Morning Star to search the boy and found the weapons.

Morning Star officials allowed authorities to arrest the boy for possessing weapons on school property. District 81 provides educational services for the boy’s ranch, located on the east edge of Moran Prairie.

“We’re glad the (Chase) students were vigilant,” said Hugh Davis, District 81 spokesman. “They acted responsibly and notified the principal there was a gun on campus.”

It was the first gun-related incident in the district this school year, Davis said.
