Texas Loses, But Clinches A.L. West

Associated Press

American League

The Texas Rangers clinched their first postseason appearance Friday night despite losing 4-3 to the California Angels in 15 innings.

Garret Anderson hit a two-run single - his sixth hit - in the top of the 15th for California.

But the loss meant little to the Rangers, who had learned in the 13th inning that second-place Seattle had lost 8-1 in Oakland, giving Texas the American League West title.

Blue Jays 3, Orioles 2

Toronto

Toronto edged Baltimore, but the Orioles’ magic number to clinch a wild-card berth fell to one with Seattle’s loss at Oakland.

Roberto Alomar was ejected from the game in the first inning after arguing a called third strike by umpire John Hirschbeck. It was his first ejection of the season, and after he charged from the dugout he had to be restrained by Baltimore manager Davey Johnson.

Johnson wasn’t able to stop Alomar from spitting in Hirschbeck’s face, an infraction that could result in a league-mandated suspension for the Orioles’ leading hitter.

Brady Anderson tied the Orioles’ team record with his 49th homer.

Red Sox 7, Yankees 5

Boston

Yankees manager Joe Torre’s playoff pitching dilemma deepened when the Red Sox hammered Dwight Gooden.

Darren Bragg drove in three runs for Boston with two doubles, and Nomar Garciaparra had three RBIs with his fourth homer, a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the eighth that made it 7-5.

White Sox 4, Twins 2

Minneapolis

Ray Durham and Danny Tartabull homered as Chicago stayed alive in the wild-card race with a win over Minnesota.

The victory, coupled with Baltimore’s loss at Toronto, left the White Sox two games back with two to play.

Royals 11, Indians 6

Kansas City, Mo.

Jose Rosado outdueled Orel Hershiser, and Kansas City stole home a club-record ninth time in a win over Cleveland.

Rosado (8-6), who lasted only four innings in a 13-4 loss to Hershiser and the Indians last Saturday, gave up eight hits and three runs.

Hershiser (15-9) took the loss.

Brewers 7, Tigers 6 (5)

Detroit

Jose Valentin and Matt Mieske each drove in two runs as Milwaukee handed Detroit its 15th straight home loss.

The game was called with one out in the top of the sixth after the last of three rain delays, which totaled 2 hours and 39 minutes.

Former Mariner arrested

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Marc Newfield was arrested on drug charges, authorities said.

Wayne County Sheriff Robert Ficano said Newfield was arrested at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, just outside of Detroit, about 3 p.m.

Ficano said police received information that a delivery was to occur and they obtained a search warrant.

Newfield, a former Seattle Mariner, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and was released after posting $300 bond, Ficano said.

Newfield had about 30 grams of marijuana and about $1,000 cash when arrested, Ficano said.

Clearing the bases

Jim Thome’s 38 home runs are the most by an Indians left-hander since Hal Trosky’s 42 in 1936. … Toronto’s Paul Quantrill has allowed 27 homers in 38 appearances.
