Theodore ‘Ted’ Carlson Troy, Idaho

Memorial service for Theodore J. “Ted” Carlson, 60, will be held at Ted’s Burgers in Moscow at a later date. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carlson, a longtime area restaurant owner, died Thursday from cancer.

He was born in Spokane and grew up and attended schools there, graduating from Freeman High School. He went on to serve for six years in the Air Force in Germany and returned to Spokane after his military discharge.

Mr. Carlson was a truck driver for Pepsi and later worked for Joey August beer and wine distributors in Spokane.

He began a restaurant career in Spokane as a partner in T.J.’s Restaurant and various A&Ws, before moving near Troy and opening his own A&W in Moscow in 1968.

His restaurant later became Ted’s Burgers, which he was still recently involved with.

Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Cindy; a son, Kyle Carlson; three daughters, Kelly Caudle, Kayla Carlson, and Lisa Nelson; parents, Ted and Edna Carlson; a brother, John Carlson; and a sister, Joanne Owens, all of Spokane; seven grandchildren; and special friend and business partner, Andy Kiblin.

Memorials may be made to the Troy Ambulance Fund.

Alvin Haugen Spokane

Graveside service for Alvin I. Haugen, 90, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Haugen, who was born on the family farm in northwest North Dakota, died Wednesday.

He was a 50-year Spokane resident and worked as an independent construction electrician.

He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Sons of Norway.

His wife of 53 years, Thelma, died in 1991.

He is survived by a daughter, Reba Jewell of Spokane; two sons, Alvin Haugen Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska, and Tom Haugen of San Pedro, Calif.; two sisters, Olive Maxwell of Spokane, and Lily Foster of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, George Haugen of Grenora, N.D., and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sons of Norway or South Hill Senior Center.

Floyd Smith Deer Park

Graveside service for Floyd K. Smith, 72, will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Minnesota, died Thursday.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in the early 1930s after being discharged from the military.

He later moved to Spokane and then to Deer Park in 1989.

Mr. Smith had worked for the Forest Service in park maintenance and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Deer Park Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Brundage of Copolis Beach, Wash., and Douglas Smith; three daughters, Candice, Cindy and Sandy; two brothers, Dick Smith of St. Maries, and Edgar Smith of Coeur d’Alene; and several grandchildren.

Kathryn Groff Marlin, Wash.

Visitation for Kathryn V. Groff, 85, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Kayser’s Chapel of Memories in Moses Lake. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Moses Lake Alliance Church.

Mrs. Groff, a longtime Marlin resident, died Wednesday at her daughter’s home.

She was born in Genesee, Idaho.

She was raised in Uniontown, Wash., and Coulee City, Wash.

In 1930, she married Raymond Groff in Waterville, Wash.

Before settling in Moses Lake, she and her husband had lived in Coulee City, Electric City, Wash., Soap Lake, Wash., and briefly in California.

Her husband died in 1975. Following his death, Mrs. Groff moved to Marlin.

She is survived by two sons, Earl Groff of Tonasket, Wash., and Donald Groff of Kent, Wash.; three daughters, Patricia Friend of Marlin, Carolyn Olson of Cameron Park, Calif., and Cheryl Crandall of Rathdrum, Idaho; a brother, David Spurbeck of Coulee City; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
