Park At Liberty Lake To Hold Summer Concerts

CORRECTION: 7-17-97; Pg. 3 The Box Tops concert at Liberty Lake’s Pavillion Park on Aug. 2 is an evening concert, starting at 7 p.m. An opening act starts at 6 p.m. A recent edition of the Valley Voice reported incorrect starting times.

Summer will be a little more entertaining this year at Liberty Lake.

Spokane County commissioners on Tuesday gave their blessing to plans to hold four free concerts at the lake community’s Pavilion Park.

“Some of us grew up in an era when there was a concert in every park every weekend,” said Commissioner Phil Harris. “This gives a reason for the existence of the park.”

Greenstone Corp., which developed the MeadowWood neighborhood, will sponsor the concerts, said company president Jim Frank. The acts include a children’s show, a rock/folk duet, a country singer and a 1960s pop-music band.

Frank expects crowds as large as 2,000 people for some of the concerts.

Some neighbors wonder where all those people will park. There is room for 90 cars at Pavilion Park, but ample parking within one-quarter mile, said Frank, who expects most people who will attend the concerts live within walking distance.

“It’s intended to be a community event,” said Frank. “This isn’t something where we’re going to have a lot of advertising.”

Organizers plan to close some nearby cul-de-sacs to all but local traffic, hire security for the concerts and rent portable toilets.

Although the concerts are free, the community group Friends of Pavilion Park plans to ask the audience for donations to improve the park, said Frank. The group plans to sell the cookbook it produced last year and raffle a quilt, Frank said.

Friends of Pavilion Park hopes to make concerts a tradition at Liberty Lake.

“It will help build a sense of community,” said Frank.

Here’s the tentative schedule for this year’s concerts:

Saturday, July 5, 3 p.m., Norman Foote, a children’s musician, comedian and puppeteer.

Saturday, July 19, 7 p.m., Brewer and Shipley, a folk-rock duo who had a hit in 1971 with “One Toke Over the Line.”

Sunday, July 27, 3 p.m. Country singer Dan Seals, who has had 11 No. 1 hits, including “Three Time Loser” and “Meet Me in Montana.”

Saturday, Aug. 2, 7 p.m. The Box Tops, whose song, “The Letter,” hit No. 1 on the pop-music charts in 1967.
