County To Consider Request To Install Cash Machine
Paying fines and taxes isn’t getting any less painful.
But it may soon be more convenient in Spokane County.
County commissioners on Tuesday will consider a request from the Spokane Federal Credit Union to put a cash machine in the Public Safety Building.
The building, which is headquarters for city police and the county sheriff’s department, is where folks pay parking tickets and court fees. It’s next door to the courthouse, where they pay property taxes, and the public works building, where they buy building permits.
“We’re taking a little pressure off the county to serve the public when they need cash,” said credit union President Byron Edgett. It’d also be convenient for county employees, many of whom are credit union members.
The nearest cash machine, at the corner of Broadway and Monroe, is owned by Seafirst bank, which charges non-customers $1.50 for each transaction.
Edgett said the credit union doesn’t charge non-members. However, some banks charge their customers for using any machine other than their own.
The proposed contract with the credit union would cost the county nothing.
Edgett noted that cash machines are common on college campuses, airports and other government-owned buildings.
“I found one in the Capitol building in Olympia this year, down by the cafeteria,” he said. , DataTimes
