Nike Disputes Wage Exemption Reports

Compiled From Wire Services

Nike Inc. is disputing reports that it sought a minimum wage exemption for its subcontractors in Indonesia.

“We’ve told all our subcontractors they’re expected to pay the minimum wage, no exceptions, no exemptions,” said Jim Small, company spokesman.

The Indonesian government implemented a 20 cent boost in the minimum wage, to $2.36 a day, in the Jakarta region on April 1.

The March 20 edition of Bisnes Indonesia reported that three shoe subcontractors - PT Nasa, PT Hasi and PT Garuda Indawa had requested the exemption.
