Yabe Plans Retreat

Nina Culver Correspondent

A retreat for young adults who have lived in single-parent homes because of divorce, separation or death will be held in the Valley next weekend.

The retreat, which begins Friday and runs through Sunday, is designed to give participants an opportunity to share with others in similar situations.

The goal of retreat organizers is to help participants learn to express their feelings and also validate what they feel. Participants will have the opportunity to write about and discuss how they feel in a confidential environment.

“A lot of this is healing,” says organizer Kathleen Hutcheson. “When you talk about stuff, it comes out.”

Participants often have feelings of guilt if their parents divorce or separate, says Hutcheson. They may lack trust because they didn’t see it coming and feel guilt because they believe they should have known, should have done something to prevent it. By the end of the weekend Hutcheson hopes the participants will be able to accept their situation and deal with it.

The weekend is sponsored by the Young Adult Beginning Experience (YABE) of Spokane. YABE is a division of Beginning Experience, a group of divorced or widowed adults established by the Catholic Church. However, people of all denominations are welcome to attend the retreat.

The retreat will be at a church camp on Liberty Lake. The cost of the weekend is $80 and includes meals and lodging. A $15 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of registration. For registration information, call 466-2492.

Musicians to perform

Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines Road, will host a special musical performance during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services on Sunday.

The performances will feature harpist Camille Peterson in a duet with cellist Helen Byrne performing Hyden’s “Divertimento.” Peterson will also join Pamela Brownlee in performing “Spring Carol” by Benjamin Britten, as well as performing with the church choir.

Game night for young couples

The Valley Assembly of God Church, 15618 E. Broadway, is hosting a Young Married Game Night tonight at 6 p.m. Married couples are invited to come and participate in volleyball and various board games.
