Many Injured After Bus Loses Brakes

Compiled From Wire Services

A tour bus headed for the Grand Canyon lost its brakes and toppled over on an unpaved road, injuring 25 people, five critically.

The Las Vegas-based bus was carrying Taiwanese tourists to the popular landmark when it crashed Friday afternoon.

None of the five critically hurt passengers received life-threatening injuries, Mohave County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jody Schanaman said Saturday.

“We got back injuries, face lacerations, arms and shoulders hurt. They were flip-flopped all around the bus and got hit by glass and stuff,” said J.R. Harris, the driver of another tour bus that stopped to help.

“We had people on my bus who knew first aid, so they helped them,” Harris said. Fifteen of the 25 people hurt required hospitalization.

Wei Cheng, who was driving the bus operated by Las Vegas-based 88 Tours Service, told Harris that “it felt like the brakes went out.” A police investigation confirmed that.
