Pepperdine Sweeps Gu; Cougs Drop Two To Osu

Rob Reid went 3 for 3 in the first game and opened the nightcap with a homer as visiting Pepperdine swept Gonzaga University 7-2, 12-4 Saturday in a West Coast Conference baseball doubleheader at August/ A.R.T. Stadium.

Tyler Ferrer of the Waves (22-16, 9-1) had three doubles on the day, including one that drove in two runs during a four-run fifth in the opener. Steve Schenewerk checked the Zags (12-14-1, 2-4) on seven singles and Donnie Murrell’s leadoff homer in the third.

Murrell hit his eighth homer in the nightcap.

At Corvallis, Andrew Checketts (4-2) and Chris Pine (3-2) earned the wins as the Beavers (19-6-1, 3-0) swept the Cougars (2-26, 0-3), who notched their school record-tying 12th consecutive loss.

In the opener, Jesse Hoorelbeke’s RBI double in the fourth helped cut OSU’s lead to 3-2, but the Beavers answered with four runs, two on Ben Bertrand’s single.

OSU’s Ryan Lipe and Troy Schader had three-run homers in the second game and Ryan McDonald hit a grand slam.

Jason Francek had a two-run single in the third and a two-run homer in the fourth as the Pirates (7-13, 5-1 Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to beat the visiting Loggers (3-14, 1-5).

The second game was suspended after six innings because of darkness, with Whitworth leading 6-4. It will be completed prior to today’s single game.

Jack Arthaud had an RBI triple and Sam Chimienti a two-run single during Whitworth’s six-run fourth.

Billy Barker threw seven shutout innings and Chad Kline drove in four runs with a homer and two doubles as the visiting Sasquatch beat the Hawks to complete a sweep at Pasco.

Adam Flohr won the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges opener with a complete game, and contributed three RBIs to his cause.

Kendra Eneroth pitched a four-hitter and collected two hits in the second game as the Sasquatch (10-4 overall, 6-0 NWAACC) completed a sweep of the Indians at Spokane Falls CC.

In the opener, Heather Hedum went 4 for 4, with two RBIs, and Katie Carpenter struck out six and walked none.
