Sales Of Fuhrman Book Phenomenal In Sandpoint

“Murder in Brentwood” has been a huge boon to Sandpoint’s sole bookseller.

So far, 1,500 copies of Mark Fuhrman’s best-selling account of the O.J. Simpson case have been sold at Vanderford’s two locations. And 1,000 more copies were ordered in anticipation of Saturday’s book signing.

“We’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Michelle Finley, who manages the downtown store in Sandpoint.

Few bookstores have.

“That’s phenomenal. That’s remarkable,” said Terry Galiney at Elliott Bay Book Co. in Seattle about the Sandpoint sales figures.

Elliott Bay’s biggest seller ever was during a signing of Colin Powell’s autobiography, “An American Journey,” when 2,000 copies were sold.

One reason Vanderford’s has sold so many books is that Fuhrman has done signings nowhere else and orders for autographed copies have poured in from all across the country, Finley said.

Locals also have been supportive.

“A lot of people buy them because he’s a local boy and they want to support him,” Finley said. “Whether they read it or not, they want to buy it to help him out.”

During the first signing on March 15, Fuhrman spent eight hours straight shaking hands with people and autographing their books.

“We were hesitant to do one at first because we didn’t really know what to expect,” Finley said. “But we had a line snaking through the mall.”

She said people brought Fuhrman gifts, including stuffed animals for his children and hand-tied fishing flies.

“I think he was tickled at how well received he was,” Finley said.
