Greeny Pitches WSU To Slump-Ending Victory

Area baseball

Junior right-hander Burdette Greeny pitched an eight-hit complete game and struck out nine Sunday as Washington State University snapped a 12-game baseball losing streak by defeating Pac-10 North rival Oregon State 6-4 at Corvallis, Ore.

Greeny (1-4) picked up his first victory of the season while the Cougars (3-26) were collecting 11 hits off five Oregon State (19-7-1) pitchers.

WSU broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning when Ray Hattenburg, who had a pair of hits, singled home Scott Randall with the winning run. Later in the inning, Greg Mitchell plated Hattenburg with a groundout.

Greeny was especially tough in the final three innings, retiring the Beavers without a hit.

WSU had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to two walks, a bases-loaded wild pitch, Casey Kelley’s run-scoring grounder and Greg Mitchell’s run-scoring single.

OSU answered quickly in its half of the inning, using an error and two hits. In the third, Ryan McDonald’s two-run home run gave the Beavers a 4-3 lead.

Kelley tied the game with his second homer of the season in the sixth.
