Homosexual Murders Decried In Brazil

Compiled From Wire Services

A homosexual is killed in Brazil nearly every three days, amounting to 1,480 recorded deaths between 1980 and 1996, a gay rights group said in a report published Monday.

Most of the victims were prostitutes killed by clients or death squads, the Rio-based Atoba Movement for the Emancipation of Homosexuals said.

“Many of the same people who applaud drag queens during Carnival, are the same who kill them on the street,” Raimundo Pereira, the group’s vice president told The Associated Press.
