Priest River coach resigns

Ron Hopkins resigned as head girls basketball coach and assistant football coach at Priest River High School.

“My reasons for resigning are too numerous to mention,” said Hopkins, who will continue as the school’s athletic director.

Girls basketball had made big strides under Hopkins, who took over a floundering program four years ago.

He leaves a healthy program with three starters returning and the most talented incoming freshman class in years.

“The future is bright,” Hopkins said. “I really don’t have a main reason for getting out. It’s a series of things that have gotten me to the point where somebody else needs to tackle it.”

CCS scores softball sweep

Toshua Ballou stroked a bases-loaded 10th-inning single that scored three runs and sparked visiting Community Colleges of Spokane to a 9-6 win over Walla Walla Community College in the first game of an NWACC softball doubleheader.

The Sasquatch (10-4, 8-0 in NWACC) completed the sweep by winning the nightcap 5-0 behind the pitching of Traci Moore, who scattered four hits and did not walk a batter.
