Former Pta Officer Pleads Guilty To Theft

From Staff And Wire Reports

A former elementary school PTA officer accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from the group’s checking account has pleaded guilty to first-degree theft.

Marlene Mata of Pasco also pleaded guilty Tuesday in Franklin County Superior Court to writing about $1,500 in bad checks to Kmart.

Mata, who remained free on her own recognizance, is scheduled to be sentenced May 15.

Prosecutor Steve Lowe said he plans to recommend a four-month term for Mata, who has no criminal history. The standard sentencing range is two to six months.

“If she is able to come up with the full restitution prior to sentencing, the recommendation may be reduced,” Lowe said.
