Big Band Sound Coming To Hobart’s

Don Adair

Saturday night at Hobart’s, Tom Molter’s All-Star Big Band, with Gary Gemberling on vocals, will recreate one of the golden eras of American music.

Molter is a trombone player and arranger who leads a big band that swings like Basie’s. Gemberling is a trumpet player and singer who has Sinatra nailed.

Together, they take listeners back to a time when the best music was heard live, on the radio, or in hotel ballrooms and seaside retreats. The music nearly disappeared before being rescued by a younger generation of musicians and fans.

Molter’s big band is based on his popular sextet, Kind of Blue, and includes many of the town’s best players - Brian Ploeger, Andy Plamondon, Gary Edighoffer, Nat Wickham, Terri Cooley and Dick Hubbard.

The big band plays original arrangements by Molter and the University of Idaho’s Dan Bukvich. For Gemberling’s numbers, Molter has transcribed classic Sinatra big band recordings.

Showtime is 9 p.m. Admission is $6 at the door.
