T-Wolves Blow Away Trojans 17-7

By Jonathan Hay Correspondent

Lake City High School took its lumps Thursday, but beat Post Falls 17-7 in a baseball game that epitomized spring sports in North Idaho.

The Timberwolves had three batters hit by pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning in a wind-blown game ended there by the 10-run rule when LC’s Tyson Harlin was hit with the bases loaded. Those misdirected pitches stung quite a bit, no doubt, as the wind-chill factor made the chilly air seem even colder.

“I’d rather play in the rain with one of the batting cage dimple balls than in wind like this,” Post Falls coach John Pettoello said.

Post Falls led early in the game after Mike Heston hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Trojans extended their lead to 5-0 after two innings as LC’s starting pitcher, Aaron Cohen, struggled with control.

However, the victorious T-Wolves found their hitting stroke in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs off Trojans starter Larry Shenfield.

“They got out five quick ones on us but we bounced back,” LC coach Cory Bridges said.

Cohen (2-1) settled down and gave up just two more runs on the way to a complete game. Shenfield (0-3) gave up four more runs before he was replaced by Ben Sharon in the third inning.

Josh Merk had three hits for the T-Wolves (5-2). Andy Potter also reached base three times.

Potter, Lake City’s standout pitcher who played first base Thursday, hit the ball sharply three times and was pleased with the T-Wolves’ play.

“It was definitely one of our better outings this season as far as hitting the ball,” Potter said.
