Bored Teens Suspected In Blasts, Officials Say

Associated Press

Investigators believe bored high school students on spring break were responsible for three small explosions that damaged two parked vehicles and a home in the Valley, sheriff’s officials said Friday.

“The indication is that they were kind of bored, didn’t have anything to do over spring break and they decided to use explosive devices,” Spokane County sheriff’s Capt. Doug Silver said.

Authorities expect at least 10 teens aged 16 to 18 will be charged with counts ranging from arson to failing to report a violent crime, Silver said. Some of the teens have confessed their involvement, he said.

The first explosion shattered a window and bent the door frame of an unoccupied dump truck Sunday.

On Tuesday, an explosive shattered the windshield of a car. Forty minutes later, another explosive blew a four-inch hole in a living room window.

No one was injured in any of the blasts.

Investigators believe the explosives were small carbon dioxide cartridges attached to detonators. In each case, the device had been taped to the target.
